Holding Up the World: The Cervical Spine Muscles & Suboccipital Region

Anatomy of Cervical Muscles

Hello, dear friends! I’m Paulius, the founder of the JANMI Method, and today, I want to invite you on a journey—a journey into understanding one of the most underappreciated muscle groups in our body: the cervical spine muscles and the suboccipital region. By understanding and taking control of these muscles, you can empower yourself to maintain a healthy neck and better posture. They are small, they are subtle, yet they bear an enormous responsibility—one that allows us to look out at the world upright and steady.

Imagine, if you will, our ancestors standing for the first time. Thousands of years ago, those courageous hominins began walking upright. It was a monumental shift. Suddenly, our heads had to be balanced right at the top of our spines—no longer held by our front-facing arms, but steadied by a new intricate set of muscles. Muscles like the levator scapulae, sternocleidomastoid, scalenes, and suboccipitals became specialists at this job. They allowed us to look for predators, to gaze up at the sky, and eventually, to communicate face to face, with all the richness of human expression.

These cervical stabilizers are like skilled micromanagers, fine-tuning the position of our heads with every tiny movement. But in today’s world, these muscles are under siege. Hours spent with our heads craned forward over screens have led to a rise in “tech neck”—a modern affliction that compresses our suboccipitals, overstretches our cervical stabilizers, and leaves us feeling tight, sore, and often stuck in that painful forward head posture.

This story—the story of these magnificent yet strained muscles—is what inspired me to create the JANMI Method. I wanted to offer people a way to reclaim the health of their necks, to find relief from the discomfort that comes with our modern, tech-driven habits, and to restore the grace and balance that our bodies are truly capable of.

The JANMI Method Approach: A Path to Restore Cervical Balance

At JANMI, we see the cervical spine muscles as more than just individual parts of the neck. They are crucial to the entire body's balance. Here’s how we restore health to these muscles:

  • Trigger Point Therapy: Many of these muscles—like the levator scapulae and suboccipitals—often develop painful knots. I carefully palpate these sensitive points and use gentle pressure to release tension, providing immediate relief that you can feel almost instantly.

  • Myofascial Release Therapy: Technology has robbed our necks of their natural grace. The fascial tissue surrounding the cervical muscles becomes tight and restricted from poor posture. With slow, sustained pressure, I work to free these restrictions, allowing for smoother movement and reduced strain.

  • Sports Massage: The goal is not only to relax the strained muscles but also to encourage proper blood flow, which aids in recovery. Deep tissue strokes are combined with more soothing techniques to help educate the muscles to function correctly again. This is not just about treating pain but about re-educating our necks for life.

  • Manual Muscle Testing: Sometimes, to truly get to the core of your tension, we need to assess the strength and coordination of these muscles. Muscle testing allows me to identify specific imbalances, enabling me to tailor our therapy to precisely what your body needs.

  • Targeted Exercises: Therapy alone is only part of the solution. We believe in the power of targeted exercises, such as gentle chin tucks, head rotations, and side bends. These exercises, when done consistently, help activate and strengthen the cervical stabilizers, restoring the strength and stability your neck was designed for.

Why Your Neck Needs the JANMI Method

Every day in our Marylebone clinic, I meet patients whose lives have been impacted by neck tension, headaches, and the discomfort of that seemingly impossible-to-correct forward head posture. The JANMI Method is about more than just relieving pain—it’s about reconnecting you with your natural mechanics. Together, we can help you experience less pain, better posture, and more freedom of movement.

If you’ve been struggling with neck issues, I invite you to come and experience the profound relief that the JANMI Method can bring. Let’s untangle those knots, restore mobility, and get you back to the feeling of a light, balanced head sitting effortlessly atop your spine. With our method, there's hope for a more comfortable and pain-free future.

Your body deserves that natural grace. I’d love to hear your thoughts and experiences—let’s keep this journey towards functional health and well-being a conversation.
